Our History

Herrick & Salsbury began as A.B. Herrick & Son, a land surveying partnership founded in April 1962 by Malcolm P. Herrick and Richard C. Salsbury. The firm incorporated as Herrick & Salsbury, Inc. in 1968, with Richard as sole stockholder, president, and chief of parties. Originally based on Main Street in Blue Hill, the company moved to 67 Franklin Street in Ellsworth in 1978, where Jinny Salsbury joined to manage office operations and bookkeeping. With the courthouse just a short walk away, deed research was still done the old-fashioned way—by poring over bound volumes at the registry.
In the early 1980s, Stephen Salsbury began working summers with his father. After earning his degree from the University of Maine in 1987, he joined the company full-time and soon took over day-to-day operations while his parents wintered in Florida. By the 90s, Stephen was licensed and began transitioning into ownership. Richard continued to contribute to deed research and consulting when he wasn’t on the road in the RV or tending to his tractor.
Tara Hartson joined the team in 2006 and became a licensed surveyor just three years later. Having grown into a leadership role, she now manages projects, client relationships, and business operations. Tara serves as Vice President and is poised to lead the next chapter of Herrick & Salsbury, Inc. Together, she, Steve and the rest of the team continue to develop and improve the business, including the opening of a second office in Northeast Harbor in 2021, spearheaded by Tara.
