What exactly does a surveyor do?
Commonly when thinking about the role of a surveyor, many don’t really know what we do.
The surveyor works with landowners to help them understand where their boundary lines are on the ground. To do this work the surveyor, like a treasure hunter, must find stone walls, fences, blazed trees, or other evidence that relates to the written description of the land found in their deed. It is a surveyor’s job to read and interpret and write the descriptions that establish where corner pins should be placed or searched for. With an understanding of their client’s land from field evidence and written description, surveyors can oftentimes help neighbors avoid legal battles by facilitating informed discussions.
Surveyors also have a deep understanding and knowledge of the shape and contour of the Earth’s surface. This information is vital for engineering, mapmaking, and construction projects. Not to mention the cool equipment that we get to use!
What can I expect to learn?
Generally speaking, surveyors make precise measurements to determine property boundaries, but the knowledge gained goes further. Aside from basic standardized mathematics and physical sciences, you can expect to learn about practical engineering, business, and of course, surveying.
